How We Work
Transforming Community Health Through Innovation & Collaboration
The Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL), an initiative of the Public Health Institute, acknowledges the complexity of population health. Traditional approaches often fail to address the root causes of poor health, relying on narrowly focused programs that, while beneficial, provide only temporary solutions—treating symptoms rather than the underlying issues.
Mission
We create opportunities to experiment, share learning, and lead lasting change.
Purpose
PHIL exists because community change work is hard, often isolating, and deeply complex. We equip communities and change makers to navigate those challenges, catalyze equity-centered solutions, and strengthen systems that support lasting well-being.
Values
Community-Centered Co-Creation
We commit to building meaningful, collaborative partnerships that center the wisdom and leadership of communities. Our work is rooted in trust, shared power, and the belief that communities are experts in their own experience.
Shared Learning
We cultivate curiosity, deep listening, and ongoing reflection—adapting strategies to meet emerging needs through evidence-informed practices and local insights.
Experimentation
We embrace thoughtful risk-taking and knowledge translation to test, adapt, and scale ideas. Using iterative learning cycles, we assess what works, for whom, and under what conditions to transform systems and advance equity.
Equity, Access, and Social Justice
We dismantle structural barriers and champion equity in all forms, ensuring people receive the support they need to thrive. Recognizing health as a human right, we address the social and economic drivers of well-being.
We create lasting change by providing new takes on old challenges.
