About the Workshop 

Feeling stuck in your collaboration efforts? Struggling to get partners aligned? You’re not alone. Many leaders face challenges when trying to bridge sectors, build consensus, and drive real change. This workshop is designed to help you break through those barriers and create lasting, high-impact partnerships. 

The Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL) invites you to a workshop experience that will empower you to leverage strategic collaboration for lasting, systemic change. Whether you’re an emerging leader or seasoned professional, this workshop will unlock new pathways for you to enhance impact through proven strategies focused on improving systems, advancing equity, and sustaining high-performance collaborations.

Your Lead Trainers

Sue Grinnell

Sue works every day to support collaboratives in approaching their work with innovative practices and data-driven research. Her decades of experience in public health have led her to a deep understanding of and work addressing issues such as chronic disease, access to prenatal care, and children’s health. Sue is a champion for multi-sector collaboratives and Accountable Communities of/for Health (ACH) sites. Sue was instrumental in forming the initial ACH model in Washington and has played a leading role in 19 other sites, including 10 ACH sites in Vermont and 9 in California. She served as the Special Assistant for Health Transformation and Innovation, Director of the Office of Healthy Communities, Director of Office of Community Wellness and Prevention as well as the state Chronic Disease Director and Maternal and Child Health Director. Prior to her role at WSDH, she served as Director for the Cowlitz County Health Department in Longview, Washington.

Stephanie Bultema

As a trainer, Stephanie draws on her experience as a lecturer teaching Evidence-Based Decision Making to Master of Public Administration students at University of Colorado Denver and as Network Science Fellowship director for Visible Network Labs. She also leverages training in effective college instruction from the Association of College and University Educators. Throughout each training, she draws on practical experience gained as Director of MERLIN (Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning Innovations) at PHIL (2020-present), senior researcher at CU Denver’s Center on Network Science (2017-2020), multiple roles at SRHD (2011-2017), president of the School Health Care Association of Spokane County (2015-2017), and board member for Communities in Schools of Spokane County (2015-2017). She also draws on academic training gained while earning a PhD in Public Affairs from University of Colorado Denver and a Master of Arts in Administrative Leadership from Whitworth University, with additional coursework completed through Washington State University’s Master of Health Policy and Administration program.

Esmeralda Salas

Esmeralda earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a Specialization in Clinical Psychology from the University of California, San Diego in 2021. She is deeply committed to advancing population health and well-being, particularly for low-income, minority communities in both national and international contexts. Her work is characterized by a diverse range of strategies that promote strategic collaboration, such as community-based participatory planning, cultural and arts-based engagement, collaborative asset mapping, and cross-sector partnerships, and trust-building techniques. Esmeralda currently serves as a Research Associate at PHIL, where she specializes in research and evaluation efforts centered on equity and systems-change. 

Detailed Workshop Overview 

A 2-day, project-based workshop designed to deepen understanding and practice of strategic collaboration for improved population health and health equity. The workshop blends theory with practical applications, helping participants develop collaboration strategies tailored to their own practice. 

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a clear understanding of effective collaboration strategies and developed plans for applying sustainable, equity-driven approaches to strategic collaboration in their communities. 

Target Audience: Professionals in public health or related fields looking to build their strategic collaboration skills and implement equity-driven strategies in population health initiatives.

  • Is this workshop being hosted online or in person? 
    • Answer: This is an in person workshop in Denver, Colorado, though we can host this virtually or in person for your organization or partnership. If you’d like more details, please reach out to us at info@pophealthinnovationlab.org. 
  • Can more than one person from my organization attend? 
    • Answer: Yes! Workshops are more powerful and easier to implement when you have multiple people from your team sharing knowledge and building skills together. We offer a 20% group discount off the regular rate when two or more people register together to attend the same workshop. 
  • Can multiple people attend with a single registration? 
    • Answer: No. This workshop is interactive and will require each person to participate in activities within small groups. We have capped the registration at a certain number of participants to ensure effective teaching and connection between peers. Each person, therefore, requires their own registration. 
  • What currency does this workshop series use? 
    • Answer: We are based in the United States and our registration is in US dollars. 
  • What can I do if my organization doesn’t allow me to pay by credit card? 
  • What resources will I receive? 
    • Answer: We will send out copies of any presentation or handouts ahead of the workshop session. After the workshop, we will share any additional referenced resources. 
  • Do I have to be seasoned in collaboration work to attend this workshop? 
    • Answer: This workshop is intended for leaders, stewards, and members of collaborative bodies working to advance well-being in their communities. Turn-over is a common thing in collaboratives. We invite anyone who identifies with any of the “Who Should Enroll” bullets to attend-despite years of experience. 
  • Are tickets refundable? 
    • Answer: Tickets are refundable until two weeks prior to the event (June 3, 2025). Registrants who cancel will receive a refund of their registration fee minus Eventbrite fees and a 10% PHIL processing fee. The 10% fee covers non-recoupable administrative expenses associated with registration and event preparation. 
  • How do I request a refund?
