Workshop Description

Join us for an engaging and dynamic  six-month learning lab hosted by the Population Health Innovation Lab, designed exclusively for local health departments! This interactive experience will enhance and accelerate your outbreak response and prevention strategies within healthcare settings. Building on past webinars and workshops, such as our collaboration with NACCHO on outbreak response and prevention in healthcare settings, the Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL) team offers this six-month learning lab to further strengthen health department capacities. Our expertise in delivering structured, practical training equips departments with the tools needed to respond to and manage complex HAI/AR challenges effectively through collaborative and evidence-based approaches. This six-month workshop focuses on building foundational capabilities in health departments for managing Healthcare-Associated Infections/Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) outbreak response. Each month will cover key areas such as infection prevention, data utilization, and partnership development to ensure participants are equipped with the necessary skills for effective outbreak response.

This learning lab offers Local Health Departments (LHDs) a unique opportunity to strengthen key foundational capabilities that align with broader public health infrastructure initiatives, such as those supported through Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) activities. By addressing healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), this learning lab helps LHDs build core capabilities crucial for sustainable, responsive public health systems.

  • Workforce Development: Equip your team with specialized, practical knowledge to respond effectively to HAI and AMR, ensuring a skilled workforce capable of meeting emerging healthcare challenges.
  • Community Partnership Building: Learn strategies to foster partnerships across departments and organizations, reinforcing collaborative networks that are essential for resilient public health infrastructure.
  • Public Health Surveillance and Data Management: Enhance your department’s capacity for data-driven decision-making through advanced surveillance and response skills, supporting both immediate and long-term public health objectives.

This workshop is tailor-made for local health departments engaged in outbreak response and prevention efforts in healthcare settings. If you’re looking to strengthen your team’s capabilities and foster impactful collaborations, this is the event for you! 

Learning Lab Agenda: 

  • Month 1: Foundations of HAI/AR and assessing internal capacity through self-assessments and capacity-building plans. 
  • Month 2: Securing access to data collection systems and developing Data Use Agreements (DUAs). 
  • Month 3: Infection prevention strategies, ICAR (Infection Control Assessment and Response) audits, and applying infection control best practices. 
  • Month 4: Building formal partnerships with healthcare facilities via Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and enhancing communication strategies. 
  • Month 5: Outbreak investigation simulations and hands-on epidemiological analysis for data-driven decision-making. 
  • Month 6: Creating sustainable data dashboards for ongoing surveillance and continuous performance monitoring. 

Outcome of the Learning Lab: By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed internal capacity for HAI/AR response, established partnerships, completed outbreak investigations, and built a sustainable data monitoring system.
